Two End Knitting DVD
Two End Knitting with Carin Appelqvist is a charming and informative new DVD from Sweden. Carin Appelqvist is a master knitter who specializes in Two End Knitting (also called Tvåändsstickat, or Twined Knitting) and it is a pleasure to watch her skillful hands demonstrate the techniques so clearly.
This traditional Swedish technique (which pre-dates color pattern knitting) is worked by knitting with the inside and the outside of the same ball of wool; or you can use 2 different colors, worked alternately.
Carin, sitting by her window through which you can see a view of the lake, shows you how to wind a center-pull ball; a number of different ways to cast on; how to knit, purl and a very clever increase, and how to form designs by working loops across the front (called "Crook" stitches). You are also taught how to keep the wools under control as you work. Carin's voce is overdubbed in English. $25
Two-End Knitting Book
The Two End Knitting DVD is a wonderful augmentation to Anne-Maj Ling's splendid book, Two-End Knitting (in English) $23.50.

Bohus Knitting DVD
From Relief Work to World Success
A Swedish film company has just released a new DVD: Bohus Knitting
- From Relief Work to World Success. It is devoted to the history
of the halcyon 30-year period in the annals of hand knitting when
women in Sweden's Bohuslän banded together to form a cottage
industry and ended up producing world famous works of knitted
art in the form of sweaters, hats, gloves, mittens and scarves.
The DVD is beautifully done (with an English voice-over and sub-titles).
I found it very moving to learn about individual women who had
worked so hard to help their families, and to see the extraordinarily
beautiful knitting they produced.
58 minutes, $25
After you've been inspired by the Bohus Knitting DVD, you can turn to Wendy
Keele's, Poems of Color: Knitting in the Bohus Tradition
for detailed instructions and charts for many of the traditional
and historic garments. $15

A Guernsey Pullover DVD
with Meg Swansen
A few months ago, Cully found the raw footage Chris and I had taped in Oregon in 1992, which documented knitting this child's guernsey (modeled on the cover by Eli Swansen). I had thought the film was lost, as Chris had never found time to complete this project, but now Cully has edited all the material, added Chris's music and produced a "new" (never previously released) DVD. Filmed along the spectacular Oregon coast, this Knitting Vacation takes you step by step through the Guernsey construction. Knitted in the round to the underarms, then worked flat to the shoulders-eliminating the need to cut-this is a great project for both beginning and experienced knitters. Insert instructions include numbers for a child's and an adult's size.
You will see Channel Island cast on, split lower garter-sttich welt,
Indian Corn stitch, gussets, texture patterns, horizontal, shaped
shoulder straps, garter-stitch weaving, knitting-up around armholes,
decreasting to cuffs, and EZ's sewn cast off. approx.
60 min. $20
