Fair Isle Knitting: 22 Traditional Patterns from Where the Atlantic Meets the North Sea
The Swedish author, like so many other non-British knitters around the world, became besotted by traditional Fair Isle motifs, colors, and sweater styles and has made a detailed study of the art of uniting colors and motifs. Her sweater designs are proof of her great success; some of the loveliest I have seen.
Although mostly sticking to circular, steeked sweaters worked up from the lower edge - including both yoke and dropped shoulder styles, Carina Olsson also explores construction methods used before the advent of steeks: circular body to the underarm; separate front(s) and back knitted flat; circular sleeves picked up around the armholes and shaped to the cuff.
Besides the beautiful designs, there are extensive instructions on choosing and working with colors, knitting techniques, practical help to design your own Fair Isle masterpiece, and several pages of possible charts for you to work with.
The 22 patterns include gloves, mittens, tams, cowls, project bags, and sweaters: pullovers, cardigans, yokes, and vests for men, women and children. Most adult sizes offer s, m, l, xl sizing.
